We just had back to school night, and in each of his AP classes, the teachers said we do not have time for everything. We have to cram all this information in by May. There isn’t enough TIME for them to do everything they need to do in class. This to me seems insane. But that’s how our system is. They need to “learn” all this stuff to perform at an exam. But how, with this firehouse approach, can they really learn it?

This is what’s happening in so many schools. The whole AP situation is more a reflection on college admissions than anything else. I am starting to see so clearly that college admissions needs a revolution. The entry tests do not predict college success, and they create cultures of teaching to the test that go against everything we know about learning.

I believe this wholeheartedly. I just read an article (WSJ maybe?) about the college admissions game, and how elite colleges create this scarcity mindset, and use waiting lists and play with the system. And the COST of college in the US is appalling.
