“I’m not the center of your attention. You’re the center of mine.” Caroline McHugh in her TED talk on public speaking.
adrienne maree brown reminds us that,
Belonging doesn’t begin with other people accepting us. It begins with our acceptance of ourselves.
I’ve been thinking a lot about this idea - of belonging, of feeling connected both personally and professionally.
I just left visiting with a friend who has this ability to listen to people and hear things they both say and don’t say. She centers others and hosts the MOST connective gatherings. I always leave her feeling both energized AND relaxed.
This season reminds me of how important individuals like this are, who hold this centering role as almost a secret identity.
Though adrienne maree brown might suggest that belonging begins with us, it is inherently a communal process. And there are definitely individuals who know how to foster spaces for belonging. How might we all?
