“The greatest value of a picture is when it forces us to notice what we never expected to see.” John Tukey
One of the many great joys for me in creating School of Thought has been the opportunity to explore the visual side of storytelling. Over the years, there have been many posts related to visuals and the ways they afford us opportunities to connect, learn and take action.
See this post and this post. And also this one. And, oh, also this episode of our podcast when School of Thought joined consideranew and we talked about visuals.
This post is a little different, with a little offering to readers.
The Big Idea
I pulled together the first School of Thought portable workshop ebook. This is the first of a series of three, with the next two to be shared with School of Thought members before upcoming virtual gatherings.
I have been drafting idea journals, or ebooks, to accompany virtual and in person workshops School of Thought. They are meant to be light and fun, but also provide some learning. The idea is to have a small something to take with you, to keep thinking and creating and learning and connecting to ideas.
The goal of this one is to share a framework to support why we should all be using visuals more in learning and communicating and … in being. My own love of visuals grew out of my own interest in representing complex ideas visually for myself, as a way to better process them.
The next ebook on visuals will focus on the how and what of visualization.
What visualization holds for me is another way to think. Visuals are my meditation. So was creating this little fun book. I hope you like it.

This session will first explore the research behind why visuals are so important, and then move to ways to incorporate more visuals into learning settings.
I have been illustrating ideas since I was in grade school. But after about fifth grade, drawing and painting and other artistic ways of knowing became relegated to art class. I’ve been looking for ways to integrate art into school and into life ever since.
Join on April 5th, for an exploration of visuals in learning to tap into your own.
